Alan Joyce picked up a paint brush in 1988. Since then, he has worked through every surface condition, climate challenge, and substrate the East Bay can throw at a painting contractor. That accumulated knowledge is what A&J Painting Inc. brings to every project in Berkeley and the surrounding communities.
Founded in 1999, A&J Painting operates with a six-person team that maintains a production pace without sacrificing the attention that separates lasting work from a quick coat. Alan is on every job site personally. Not managing from an office. On the job, watching the prep, checking the surfaces, making the calls that only come from decades of hands-on experience.
What 37 Years Looks Like in Practice
Experienced painters know that a paint job is only as strong as what happens before the first brush stroke. Surface preparation, moisture assessment, caulking, priming: these are the stages where quality craftsmanship either happens or it doesn’t. Shortcuts taken at the prep stage show up two years later as peeling, cracking, and bubbling. Our team does not take those shortcuts.
We carry a C-33 Contractor License (#759175) and EPA Lead-Safe Certification (Individual Renovator #R-I-19157-22-01220), which matters particularly in Berkeley’s older housing stock, where pre-1978 construction is common and lead-safe practices are not optional.

We work with Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, and Dunn-Edwards products. Our preference is Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint for exterior applications: it holds up to the Bay Area’s coastal moisture and temperature cycling better than most products in the category.
Warranties That Reflect Confidence in the Work
We back exterior projects with a five-year warranty and interior projects with a three-year warranty. Those numbers exist because we know how the work is done. Contractors who cut prep or apply inadequate film thickness cannot make those guarantees. We can.
Expert Color Consultation
Choosing paint is a different skill than applying it. We provide color consultation as part of our process, drawing on years of observing how specific colors behave in East Bay light conditions, on different substrates, and over time. It is a practical service, not an upsell.
